While dusting around the house, I stopped and stared at the following art piece above my staircase. It got me thinking about what we invite into our homes. If our house is supposed to be a sanctuary of sorts, to be ourselves, relax, be secure, etc., what happens if the sanctuary is disrupted by outside influences that can change one’s life direction and affect the whole family? And so I ask. Who do you serve? Be honest, because we all serve someone(s) or something. For example,
- Our phones,
- Our bodies,
- Our bosses,
- Our religion, or lack thereof,
- Ourselves,
- Our Country,
- Our political stance,
- Our idols (money, things),
- Our sports teams,
- Our cars, etc.
You get the picture. According to Vocabulary.com, Serve means to perform a role or a function. “Serve comes from the Latin word for servant or slave, but you can serve people without being subordinate to them…” Or can you? Because serving requires being “under”, right? What do you think? You be the judge.
Serve can also mean the following:
- Devote,
- Do,
- Work,
- Promote,
- Benefit,
- Used by,
- Spend,
- Help,
- Provide
Whatever you serve, you believe. Whatever you believe, you do. And whatever you do, ultimately becomes who you are. Which, in turn, impacts how you speak. Because you are going to be with those who say things you say and do things you do.
Hmm… Are you still with me?
Those you serve result in the actions you do and the words you speak. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue…” You can either encourage someone with your words, or break them down. It’s all connected because of the choices you make. Next time, think about who and what you serve because your legacy is on the line.
You rely on yourself, you get man-made results linked to pride and arrogance. You rely on the Lord because “For when I am weak, then I am strong,” (2 Corinthians 12:10), and you get supernatural results.
Until next time…
Be well. Be safe. Be happy!
